Now is a great time to repot your houseplants! Spring through early summer is the ideal time, as plants are actively growing and will recover quickly. The longer daylight hours and increased warmth help new roots establish faster, making it easier for your plant to adjust. But when exactly should you repot, and how should you go about it? Let’s dig in.
You don’t need to repot your plant as soon as you bring it home. Let it settle into its new environment before making any changes. On average, houseplants should be repotted every one to two years, depending on their growth rate and size.

However, not all plants need frequent repotting. Some, like monsteras, prefer slightly constricted roots and can thrive in the same pot for years.
When selecting a new pot, size matters. Increase the pot size by just one to two inches in diameter. A pot that’s too large retains excess moisture, increasing the risk of root rot and stunted growth. Drainage holes are a must to prevent water from sitting at the bottom and causing damage. Terra cotta, plastic, and ceramic pots are all great options.
Even if your plant doesn’t need a larger pot, refreshing the soil can provide a nutrient boost. Over time, the nutrients in potting soil deplete, so fresh soil helps keep plants healthy. A well-draining mix containing bark, charcoal, and perlite balances moisture retention and aeration. A blend of 50% orchid potting mix and 50% regular potting soil works well for most houseplants.

Once you’ve chosen the right pot and soil, follow these steps:

Repotting might seem intimidating, but with the right approach, it’s a simple way to support your plant’s health. Whether you’re giving roots more space or refreshing the soil, repotting sets your houseplants up for success. If you need the perfect pot or potting mix, we’ve got everything you need at Strange’s!
